She Was Never Yours To Keep

Poetry Jun 11, 2021

Look at her eyes, she’s not to settle
Try to hold her, lose the battle
Join her fight, but not the war
Read her story arch, not lore

This bird flies free, full of activity
Fights to her teeth to avoid captivity
We are just a stop at the roadside
Swept away with next low tide

She was never yours to keep
Or mine to hold forever
But for now she falls asleep
In my arms so best forget her
